LOCAL AUTHORITIES PROVIDENT FUND (LAPF)

Summary: The Local Authorities Provident Fund (LAPF) is a social security institution affiliated to Prime Minister's Office Regional Administration and Local Government (PMORALG) which caters for employees of Local Government Authorities. It was established under the Provident Fund (Local Authorities) Ordinance No. 20 of 1944. Previously the fund was operated within the Ministry responsible for Local Government in Tanzania. In the year 2000, the Local Authorities Provident Fund Act No.6 was enacted and the Fund as from 1st July 2000 was managed as an autonomous statutory corporation under a Board of Trustees. The Fund is financed through contributions of 5% of an employees monthly salary deduction and 15% of the employee’s monthly salary contribution by the employer. The LAPF membership is open to every employee who is in receipt of salary or wages from Local Government Authorities, the Local Government Loans Board, Institutions owned by Local Government Authorities or from any other institution that elects to join the Fund as a contributing employer. The objectives of the Fund are: to provide scheme for payment of retirement, survivor and unemployment benefits to depositors; to formulate and administer the above-mentioned scheme and to work towards the gradual and continous improvement of retirement and other benefits payable to the depositors of the Fund.
