ASDP | AN OVERVIEW

Agricultural Sector Development Programme (ASDP) is National scope formulated in 2003 by Agricultural Sector Lead Ministries in collaboration with Development Partners, and other agricultural sector stakeholders.

The formulation of ASDP through a participatory consultative process among a wide range of sector stakeholders built a basis for greater collaboration among all Sector lead Ministries, Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and other stakeholders thus providing an opportunity to stimulate agricultural growth and rural poverty reduction.

The objectives of the Programme is to enable farmers to have better access to and use of agricultural knowledge, technologies, marketing systems and infrastructure, all of which contribute to high productivity, profitability and farm incomes and to promote private investment based on an improved regulatory and policy environment .

The Agricultural Sector Lead Ministries include Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives (MAFC), Ministry of Livestock Development and Fisheries (MLDF), Ministry of Industries, Trade and Marketing (MITM), Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MoWI) and the Prime Minister's Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG). These Ministries are responsible for the overall supervision and coordination regarding implementation of ASDP. Moreover, PMO-RALG is assigned to oversee ASDP implementation at Local Government level by setting policies, regulatory framework, creating conducive environment and developing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms that will ensure proper supervisory and feedback mechanism.

This has been designed so that Agricultural Sector Lead Ministries get information and knowledge on the ASDP implementation, performance, successes and challenges at Local Government level.
